I always assumed VT had transitioned and that the voice/physique change was the result of transitioning. In my head I combined that with the theory that in the future (as imagined by the Bebop writers) the process of transitioning is more effective. VT could be a butch "she" as others commented, but in my mind VT is a trans man and that explains the looks/voice.

Victoria Terpsichore, more widely known as simply "VT" was a well-respected, interstellar trucker with the nickname "Heavy Metal Queen". Her late husband was the famous bounty hunter, Ural Terpsichore, but that was not widely known by others. Although Terpsichore loved her husband, she came to hate his profession, especially when it killed him.
