The Gloster E.28/39 was a testbed aeroplane for Britain's first jet engines. It flew successfully from May 1941 until 1945, making several hundred flights and making an important contribution to jet engine development. Frank Whittle patented his gas turbine engine design in 1930 but nobody showed much interest until 1936 when a company was founded…. The E.28/39 reached a maximum of 25,000 feet (7,620 meters) and 300 miles per hour (483 kilometers per hour). W4041/G was restricted to 2 g maneuvers because of stress placed on the cast aluminum compressor case. Gloster test pilots conducted three series of flight tests with W.4041/G.

The Gloster E.28/39, (also referred to as the "Gloster Whittle", "Gloster Pioneer", or "Gloster G.40") was the first British jet-engined aircraft to fly. It was designed to test the Whittle jet engine in flight, leading to the development of the Gloster Meteor. In September 1939, the Air Ministry issued a specification to Gloster for an aircraft to test one of Frank Whittle's turbojet designs.. The Gloster E.28/39 wasn't only just a 'first' for the Gloster Aircraft Company, it proved that jet propulsion worked. It was the first British jet aircraft to fly and was a single engine design and powered by a Whittle W.1 engine.
