Most generally, a power rail failure involves the failure of a component in the power circuit of the motherboard. It could be an IC, it could be a capacitor, there are multiple possible failure points. As to causation, just about any electrical item is subject to component failures. Static Electricity, Power surges, overheating of components.. It wasn't a blow, but the screen went black immediately (whilst still being somewhat lit) and wouldn't come back on again. I've run the diagnostic test and the LED now blinks 2,8 which apparently corresponds to LCD power rail failure.
