•Incoming short wavelength radiation passes through greenhouse gases and is absorbed by Earth •They absorb long wavelength radiation that's re-radiated from Earth's surface •They then re-radiate it in all directions including back towards earth. In the atmosphere, these greenhouse gases and clouds absorb some of this longwave radiation and re-radiate it back to the surface, further increasing temperatures. Approximately 15-30% of incoming solar energy is transmitted through the atmosphere, while 70-85% is reflected back to Earth, enhancing surface warmth.

Greenhouse gases absorb radiation from the sun and re-radiate it back toward the Earth's surface, which helps to maintain a normal range of temperatures on Earth.. Carbon dioxide and methane are examples of greenhouse gases because they absorb long wavelength radiation from the Earth. When sunlight strikes the Earth's surface, some of it radiates back toward space as infrared radiation (heat). Greenhouse gases absorb this infrared radiation, causing surface temperatures to rise.
