Alfred and Frederick Johnson established Johnson Brothers in 1883. Their father was married to the daughter of Alfred Meakin. They purchased the defunct Charles Street Works located in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent at a bankruptcy sale. The Rev. Henry Johnson joined the firm in 1888. A year later, their fourth brother Robert became a partner. The company focused on the production of "White Granite..
